National Guard Host the National Wildlife Turkey Federation Workshop
Ethan Allen Firing Range Opens for
Women Outdoor Sports Development Workshop
The weather was excellent on March 31st as the Ethan Allen Firing Range hosted the National Wild Turkey Federation Women in the Outdoors Workshop event. “Women in the Outdoors” is a program to increase and promote women participation in outdoor activities as well as encourage networking
of new friends and fun skills. It provided a great Mother and Daughter outing as well as sparking new outdoor interest. 50 participants took advantage of the workshops to learn skills such as shotgun shooting, turkey hunting, archery, outdoor Photography, Map/Compass reading, Gardening, Self Protection and the latest outdoor sport of Geo-Caching (treasure hunting with GPS monitors). Local coordinator Lindsay Miller, a contract employee working at Ethan Allen Firing Range teamed up with Mrs. Pat Thompson the Regional Director for the largest women’s outdoor affiliation. Instructors from the NWTF as well as members of the Vermont National Guard Small Arms Readiness Training Section (SARTS) provided excellent training.

Mid-morning excitement came as CW3 Shayne Atkinson from Company C of the 3-126 Aviation Battalion piloted a UH-60 Helicopter to the EAFR. CPT Doran Metzger and the MEDEVAC flight crew recently returned from a year long tour just south of Baghdad. The team allowed the ladies to get up close and personal with the helicopter and

crew to ask questions and take pictures. A light breakfast with coffee was served as well as lunch at the Cram Dining Facility. A silent auction was held with many items relating to outdoor sports. The National Guard Women’s Display was featured to promote what Women Do in the National Guard and highlight the many occupations women are now courageously occupying.
