Monthly Update

March is Women's History Month and women are still making distinguished history.

Army Spec. Monica Lin Brown

CAMP SALERNO, Afghanistan - A 19-year-old medic from Texas who braved insurgent gunfire to pull her comrades to safety will become the first woman in Afghanistan and the second woman since World War II to receive the Silver Star. Full story from THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, 10 March 2008.

We know the Pentagon policy prohibits women from serving in front-line combat roles however the nature of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, with no real front lines, has meant female soldiers take part in close-quarters combat more than in previous conflicts.  To achieve distinguished service is a credit to equality of training and the integrity of soldiers getting the job done.

On the Diversity Boards this month you will find the 2008 Federal Women's Conference Flyer announcing the March 20th event Major General Martha T. Rainville, USAF (ret) is the Key Note speaker.  MG Rainville made history by becoming the first female Adjutant General in history.  Currently there are 2 female AG's, Nevada and Pennsylvania.

The Senior Leader Diversity Training was held on March 8th at the Regional Training Institute.  The training received positive feedback from the 47 Senior Leaders who attended.  For a summary of the training, the slides and handouts please visit the Diversity Page link.

Equal Opportunity Leader Training will be in September 2008.  All Equal Opportunity Leaders who have not been title 10 trained are required to complete this 60 hour course.  Contact your Brigade Equal Opportunity Advisor for more information.  See Military EO Page for more course details.
