Office of the Judge Advocate GeneralJAG MISSION STATEMENT The Office of the Staff Judge Advocate (OSJA) has the mission of providing timely and accurate legal advice and legal support to units, service members and their families within the Vermont National Guard. Within the OSJA, however, there are multiple categories of functions which are described below. The administrative law function provides as the primary resource for commanders, assisting with interpretation of regulations, advice and counsel on investigations, and compliance with ethical standards. The military justice function advises O-6 Command or higher on all military justice matters. The legal assistance function provides free legal assistance to Soldiers and their family members. Legal assistance includes advice regarding personal legal problems such as wills, powers of attorney, employment and reemployment rights act, the service members civil relief act, insurance, taxation, marriage, divorce, renting or leasing, and many other areas. Legal assistance attorneys cannot represent members in civilian courts. In addition, this assistance does not include criminal or official military matters. The operational law function provides advice and assistance to commanders on the full range of legal issues that arise on the battlefield and in Operations Other Than War. The advise and assist in developing training in areas such as rules of engagement, targeting, and Law of War. Contracts and fiscal law function provides legal advice and guidance on the expenditure of federal funds assisting commands in insuring that federal funds are spent in accordance with applicable laws along with the implementation of these laws.
